apibrėžtis Iškilmės prasideda valstybės vadovo, TOK prezidento, olimpinių žaidynių organizacinio komiteto ir NOK vadovų bei jų palydovų pasirodymu centrinėje olimpinio stadiono ložėje. Dalyvių paradą pradeda Graikijos, užbaigia šeimininkų delegacija. Apsukę stadiono taku ratą, sportininkai sustoja aikštėje priešais centrinę tribūną. Sveikinimo kalbą sako organizacinio komiteto prezidentas. TOK prezidentas sako trumpą kalbą, jos pabaigoje prašydamas valstybės vadovą pradėti žaidynes. Valstybės vadovui paskelbus žaidynes pradėtas, į stadioną įnešama olimpinė vėliava ir iškeliama skambant olimpiniam himnui. Sportininkas, kuriam pavesta baigti olimpinės ugnies deglo nešimo estafetę, uždega olimpinę ugnį. Uždegus olimpinę ugnį, kaip simbolis paleidžiami skrieti balandžiai. Sportininkas ir teisėjas duoda iškilmingą priesaiką. Choras ir orkestras atlieka valstybės, kurioje vyksta olimpinės žaidynės, himną. Sportininkai užima jiems skirtas vietas stadione, prasideda šventinis meno ir sporto renginys. Pirmą kartą olimpinių žaidynių atidarymo ceremonija surengta V olimpinėse žaidynėse Stokholme 1912 m. gegužės 5 d.
